White Rock lake, Sunset bay water off shores of Winfrey Point
Photo story
Photo 1:
Watch This!
Shelby put on a show for me. I spotted her by herself in an area I'd not seen her before. She was in the process of taking an elaborate bath. She did not mind my taking photos as she did so. She started out by ruffling all her feathers until she looked very fluffy.
Photo 2:
Bathing Beauty
She dunked her head underwater then shook water drops off the wingtips. With an eye on me to be sure I was watching.
Photo 3:
Belly Flop!
She raised up and did a belly flop back into the water with a loud sploosh sound.
Photo 4:
Shaking My Tail Feathers
She shook her tail feathers vigorously sending water high in the air behind her.
Photo 5:
Airing Out The Armpits
Its very important to remember your armpits when bathing.
Photo 6:
Wing Slaps On The Water
I am not sure why slapping the wings on the water is a part of a duck's bath but they all do it. Sends water drops high in the air and makes a loud sound.
Photo 7:
My Spin Cycle
All ducks & geese do this move too while bathing. It seems to wring the water off the head and neck. I call it the spin cycle.
Photo 8:
Wing Stretch
Next step is to stretch out your wings while you puff out your chest.
Photo 9:
Catching Air Lift
A few wing flaps done slowly to dry your wings can result in catching a bit of air lift. It was so nice to finally get a look at those beautiful wings.
Photo 10:
Do A Little Log Dance
Time to jump on the log & do a little dance.
Photo 11:
Jump Back In The Water
I thought she was done but Shelby jumped back in the water.
Photo 12:
Getting Ready To Jump
Right after jumping in the water, Shelby changed her mind. She turned around to jump back on the log. First she raised her wings to get lift.
Photo 13:
Lift Wings High
She lifted her wings all the way up and back to their fullest extent.
Photo 14:
Up On My Toes
While her wings were up and back, Shelby stood tall on her tippy toes in order to jump back on the log.
Photo 15:
Alley Oop!
One big hop and she was back on the log.
Photo 16:
Whoops, Missed A Spot
As soon as she got up on the log, she seemed to notice something amiss on her tummy.
Photo 17:
Tuck That Feather Back In Place
Shelby carefully adjusted whatever it was that was out of place.
Photo 18:
Fluffing Out My Back Feathers
Kind of like the comb out after a shampoo.
Photo 19:
Here Comes The Final Wing Flap
Most water birds end a bath with a big wing flap. Shelby is no exception. After bathing and preening, she began the process of that big wing flap finale. She stood up on her toes and began to raise her wings.
Photo 20:
Flap Forward
First you flap your wings forward while standing on your tippy toes.
Photo 21:
Flap Backwards
Then you flap your wings all the way back and up while still on your tippy toes. This was an awesome look at those wings.
Photo 22:
Do A Little Jig
So funny. Shelby did a little dance on the log with her wings still up for the end of her performance.

Photo 23:
Aaaand I'm Done
Last shot I took. Shelby sat down and just sat there like a bump on a log. Show's over. Can't complain, the show was pretty spectacular.
