Description
Several males grasped this recently emerged female but then let her go quickly. After several attempted matings like that, she flew away and was grabbed in mid-air by another male. I didn't see the outcome of that attempted mating.

On trifolium. This bee was so big that she weighed down the clover (photo 4) so I'm guessing she was a queen. These are the best shots I've ever been able to get to show malar length on our black and yellow pyrobombus. I'm looking to establish a baseline for my efforts to find B caliginosus - this bee seems to have a "longer-than-short-and-shorter-than-long" malar length, but is it medium?
