Description
At a few points where its stride was modified and it had to step over an obstacle it was paw-to-paw longer than my snowshoes (big traditional rawhide ones) are long. This is a possible stride of 1 m (40 inches), also as an "up-and-over" stride which is of course more impressive.

Description
Alberta's only native purple rhododendron, Rhododendron lapponicum. This is a very rare plant in Alberta that is only found in a few areas, and it has a wonderful fragrance that adds an amazing character to the tundra.

Description
The wooly lousewort always reminds me of a tiny little spaceship about to take off. It has a dense coat of fine hairs to deflect intense radiation and keep the plant warm despite the intense alpine cold.

Description
Jones' Columbine, one of my favorite Alberta rare plants. This tiny alpine columbine has flowers that are as large as the entire plant!
It is extremely rare in Alberta.
