The Transient orca pod I saw is doomed and will probably die out due to contamination from the Exxon Valdez oil spill. No calves have been born in that pod since the spill in 1989. Resurrection Bay, Seward, Alaska.

A male Resident orca, with the long dorsal fin, swims with two females as they hunt fish. Later in the trip we saw a pod of Transient orcas that hunt marine mammals. baby orca - small dorsal fin with a little nick in it. The adults seemed to be encouraging it to 'hunt' a groper they had deposited on the surface, but the orca was more interested in making passes at the boat.

The following mammal eating transient orca (Bigg's Killer Whales) have been identified in this sighting. The CA51s, "CA51C Bumper, who was in Monterey Bay on 3 May. The CA206s, CA223s, CA166, CA172s, and CA173s! And a few others"

Between 20-30 Transient Killer Whales from several matrilines (CA39s, CA140Bs (Louise's family), CA180, CA40, CA137, CA163 "Liner") teamed up for six hours, but were not able to take down two adult Grey Whales who showed their defensive experience - they stayed side by side, kept their vulnerable bellies up, whacked KWs with massive throws of their flukes, and generally outlasted these hungry apex predators.
