Description

Brown Algea, Phylum Phaeophyta. Brown algae contain chlorophyll, but the green color is hidden by gold and brown pigments, which look like light green to dark black because of their varying proportions.

Genus Fucus is vesicled and dichotomously branched. (Fucus = seaweed in Greek).

Rockweed (Fucus distichus) Body shape: branched with air bladders. Habitat: high to mid intertidal, on rock, extremely common. Distribution: Alaska to California.

Field Guide to Seaweeds of the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Bridgette Clarkston, Harbour Publishing, 2015 (Laminated Pamphlet).

Per SEANET (Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station) what was previously identified as Fucus distichus, is now called Fucus gardneri:
Fucus gardneri
Phylum Ochrophyta, Class Phaeophyceae, Order Fucales, Family Fucaceae
Thallus to 25 cm tall, flattened dichotomous branches with midrib, 15-25 mm wide; olive-brown. Reproductive conceptacles concentrated at branch tips (swollen when mature).
Common, upper mid-intertidal zone, protected outer coast.
Geogr. Range: Washington to Pt. Conception
Synonyms: previously identified as Fucus distichus

SEANET Hopkins Marine Station for "Nearshore Plants and Animals of the Monterey Bay" https://seanet.stanford.edu/brown#Fucus

Author calls it Pacific Rockweed (Fucus gardneri) This common species can withstand both the freezing of winter and the desiccation of summer. Color varies from olive green to yellowish green. Its swollen yellow tips or receptacles contain the gametes for reproduction. When the tide goes out, the receptacles shrink, squeezing out the gametes. When the tide returns, sperm cells are able to find and fertilize the eggs.
