This specimen was found along the walk we had at standing Stone State Park. Bess Beetles are found in nature feeding in decaying wood and typically fallen trees in the forest. Larvae and adults feed internally in the rotting logs (oak and hickory especially) because it also provides a source of protection from predators. Adult Bess Beetles will only be found outside of this protected zone when they are seeking mate. In the Urban environment, Bess Beetles serve as a monitor of the environments health. As we cut down more trees for human development, we reduce many insects habitat. The reduce numbers of Bess Beetles would be a good indicator to measure.
Larval tunnels of the Locust Borer spread fungal pathogens to the Black Locust tree and damage its value as timber.
Found on goldenrod flowers in Gully Brook Park.
