Found by a member of the public on a Golden Bay beach and posted on social media.
I think. Juvenile of a stargazer species. Found washed up on the sand. Still alive, so I put it back out to sea.
Meal time for this one. A medium sized one with the beautiful gold colouration.
Not sure what the triplefin in the mouth is, maybe scaly-headed?
~14cm long
~4m subtidal
Maybe. First three photos are after I have tried to wash some of the sand and plankton off it. Found dead on high tide line. Moderate SW winds
Another one!
Maybe another one of these?
Small one zipped in front of me twice then vanished into the dark.
~10cm long
~8m subtidal
A school of Warehou at the fish spot
Originally thought this was Seriola dumerili, and published the record as such. It turns out this was incorrect, when IDed according to "The fishes of NZ" book (Te Papa)
Found trapped in a tide pool at Tahunanui. Released back to the sea.

Little one near the big conger.
~6cm long
~1m subtidal
I think it's just the common fish that swim around in the shallows but a couple were sitting still in some floating algae which was cool.
~3cm long
Lone guy stuck in a pool of water full of seagrass
Looks like the same as a previous observation of these cool looking larval fish just a younger one: https://inaturalist.nz/observations/135866086
~1cm long
How about this one?
I thought maybe Periclimenes yaldwyni, but looks like Palaemon?
Very lucky to see this amazing larvae/juvenile fish in what was a very short snorkel.
It was right near shore and I thought it was algae until I noticed it change direction.
At first I thought something like a john dory, or maybe leatherjacket but I'm not so sure.
~1.5cm long
Taken while spearfishing at Cape Runaway. Part of a school of 30-50.
Discovered this Lamprey (we think this is what it was after lots of research) in a large rock pool at the beach near the Wai Pingao Stream at White Cliffs, Mimi, Urenui. It has circled gills, eyes approx 3 inches from mouth, and two dorsal fins near the tail.
Under a rock. I thought only A. fuscus has a pale line on the top of its head, but this specimen has way to many spines in the anal fin and only 3 lateral lines.
Thought the orange was pretty cool. It was in an overhang close to shore.
~1m subtidal

In a really nice little cave.
Large, ~1.2m. Wasn't next to the boat ramp the day before. Only visible damage was to the lower jaw and the kink/twist where it was folded over. Trawlers and a longliner(?) operate from the wharf, locals report catching large pale or grey eels in the harbour.
Dark toadfish.

Only place I have seen them. Quite a few
Just added a photo of the habitat
Scooped out of the Kaitoke Creek, Aotea / Great Barrier Island. Need help with identification
Found swimming in very shallow water over a sand flat in Broad Bay, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. Swimming in a snake like motion, very slender. Never seen before, never seen since and I go there very often.
Found dead on beach at Port Hutt, Chatham Island
Really cool to see these. There were a couple solitary ones and a couple of small schools around different Lions mane jellyfish. One swam deep into the jellyfish's' stomach to get away from me.
~2-5cm long
Was very small, and lived among the gaps between mussels.
I think. Three specimens shown. All washed in
Depth 150 to 200 metres latern fish found inside
The blue fish above the Parore (Girella tricuspidata)
Hanging out with sweep and juvenile silver drummer in the shallows
Common on Xiphophora
First time we had seen a seahorse in our reserve for a while ! Image by Brett Sutton
Found washed up alive. Released
No clue what this is - my parents sent me this photo with description. It's sitting in a 2L ice-cream container and this is around 40cm long with a yellow tipped tail. It was one of two and found on the shoreline in Matai Bay. It appeared to be air breathing and had no visible fins or gills like fish or eels. When they were released they were put in the surf but the waves receded so they buried under the sand. Sorry, it's the only photo I have. Very curious.

Not my sighting ..on behalf off. Said to have exited the water on its own. Loosing a section of tail before going back into the water
Green, hiding in the wrong place, guess I should search Ulva more to find these ones.
~3.5cm long
~Shallow subtidal
Found deceased on the shore of the bridge spit, Tiwai Estuary, Invercargill.

Grab shot, disappeared quickly.
No idea what this is. Was dead. I found it when I moved a large blue plastic container I found on the tide line, and then tipped it out to find out why flies were coming out of it. This small fish came out along with water and flies.
Total length 245cm, Total body depth 287cm, Body depth 143cm
From a few years ago but I just noticed these aren't often observed on iNat.
They were a little way out.

First time seeing a proper pelagic larval fish and they are so amazing. I saw one larger one and a smaller one, both the same species seemingly. Looks like a scorpion fish. Would that be right?
~1.5 & 2.5cm long including tentacles
Feeding, some of the green algae have been rendered clear.
@conwaykw ?
Very small and hiding under urchins. I think it is a juveile D. morelandi but I would like to hear your opinion. Thanks
