I wonder if this small plant could be Calyptridium monandrum (Common Pussypaws)? This one is about 3" across, and one of hundreds dotting the sand dunes. Many were much smaller. I vaguely remember it as a Claytonia.

Description
Small dusty fruiting bodies with a stem on the side of a tree (forgive me, I'm not good with identifying trees!). Each one is only a few millimeters in diameter, the moss provides some scale. Some are indented and ear-like in shape. There's a few different kinds, some smaller skinnier pure white ones, and what I assume are older ones that are a bit darker but are still well dusted with white.
