Description

This observation is for the salamander in the pitcher. I was surprised to find this salamander in a Sarracenia purpurea pitcher plant. It was alive. Shortly after I took the photograph, it dove deep into the pitcher where I could not see it. Although I could've missed it, I went back to this spot a week after taking this photo and could not find the salamander.

Evidently, salamanders can be prey for pitcher plants. https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ecy.2770

Observation for the plant is here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/141415049

Gemmule spicule (aka, gemmulosclere) of a freshwater sponge; a single specimen was photographed at different focal planes. Wonderful SEM images of spicules and gemmuloscleres can be seen here, https://www.researchgate.net/publication/347727829_Utilizing_sponge_spicules_in_taxonomic_ecological_and_environmental_reconstructions_a_review and LM images here https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/3-s2.0-B9780123748553000042-gr16.jpg. Gemmuloscleres provide a supporting/protective structure for a freshwater sponge's over-wintering (survival) structure, i.e., gemmules. I'm not sure if I have this right; go here for more information on the natural history of freshwater sponges https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.458.701&rep=rep1&type=pdf Cool stuff!

  • A pond edge water sample (freshwater) was taken on 2/9/2022 using a 10 micron dip net to enrich for microorganisms. Air temp. 41C. Sampling area was free of ice due the water flow through a nearby culvert.
