I think this observation will be the 4th observation of a striped whipsnake in the Death Valley region. Anyone know why they aren’t really found out here? Are they mostly high elevation snakes?

This is tragic. We only saw two other parties on the trail to Beale Falls ahead of us. This rattle snake muscles were still contracting some. The snake had been beheaded just a short time before we got there. Tragic. Why?

Bursting out of the belly of a road-killed Red-shouldered Hawk. Probably yesterday's lunch, as today was quite cloudy. Further impressive as the ditches are full of snow and most of the water is frozen over

We heard this snake while we were on the road, in woods, twenty feet away. It was rattling continuously which we had never heard before at Sobrante Ridge. We do not know why it was warning with a rattle. It kept rattling with only short breaks for over 30 minutes. I walked home to get a camera with flash and 200 mm lens and located the snake by following the direction of the rattle sound. I had a 200 mm lens.

Frosty morning and there is actual frost on the snake. It was laying on a small game trail, I think used primarily by jackrabbits. The little guy didn't move the whole time I was hovering over it with a camera.
