Buried deeply in a wet, well rotted log covered in mosses and ferns. Stromata tips broke when knife slipped during extraction process. Host seems to be lepidopteran, what looks like hair is visible in a clump that fell from the host while some remain on the host. The stromata were well covered with atypical perithecia, looking almost fuzzy. Vegetation in area include Acer, Quercus, and Pinus sp with other broadleaf deciduous trees. Small plants include Mitchella repens, Medeola virginiana, and a diversity of mosses, ferns, and lichens. Small, slow- moving stream close by. This was in a deep, well canopied, rich, moist, cove forest preserve that is not greatly fragmented.

Fungus parasitizing an arthropod (an Elaterid grub maybe?). Under rotting log in a dense mixed forest.

According to Richard Tehan :
"Awesome find. I believe this is Paraisaria gracillioides or an undescribed congener on an Elaterid beetle larva. It looks like it’s probably immature and I doubt ascospores have developed yet. You could maybe plant it back some soil and let it develop more."

Will let you guys know if I see any changes over the next week or so.
