I detoured on my way home just to find these guys. I had only gotten a distant glimpse at one and had finally hit my time limit. I was driving out of the park when I found another prairie dog town...and this guy. I think I floated back to Austin.

On 12/19/2018 I observed Western Bluebirds both at Mackenzie Park and at City of Lubbock Cemetery, but for some reason they are most often found at the cemetery.

Flew ahead of me following the crick. Lit on a branch and stayed put while I caught up. Tried to get the critter to face the camera. No dice.

I was very surprised to see a Gray Catbird coming to a water feature in the park. This is a very unusual winter visitor in this area of the Texas Panhandle.

Foggy morning on theplaya. This area btw has so far been left relatively wild with a diversity of plant species. It would be excellent for biology field studies in classes at the adjoining All Saints school. While this heron was the only bird I noticed at the time, the school could usefully put up a bird blind on the edge of their property overlooking the pond. This area is a resource that should not be mowed or otherwise spoiled.

I was ready to very tentatively label this as a Lazuli Bunting despite the lack of a brown breast or white on wing coverts, but Starrgirl saw the photos on my Facebook page and ID'd it as a Blue Grosbeak. Perfect fit!
