Description
A Fawn, still with spots, didn't see me for about ten seconds on the footpath, then turned around and was startled when she noticed me. Then mother Doe stepped out of the brush and authoritatively stamped her foot at me a couple times. She glared at me, positioning herself directly between me and her Fawn, for about ten seconds. When I didn't retreat, she snorted and leapt away with Fawn at her side.
They leapt and ran about 50 meters and stopped, looking back in my direction. Doe continued to snort or sneeze every 3 or 4 seconds for a full minute and a half (while a small plane flew low overhead), seemingly to alert other Deer in the vicinity (there was another small group about 100 meters away) that I was invading the area.
Another fascinating closeup encounter with a White-tail family on the trail. It is impressive how Does defend and lead their youngsters when they encounter unexpected situations. They are amazing to watch.
After making a few still photos, I switched to video to record any sounds they made. The audio file starts as the Doe first leapt away and snorted. She kept up the alarm for over 90 seconds. I afterwards encountered them again, and two more small family groups in the nearby fields, out in the open late in the evening. This is a great place for Deer watching.
