Description
A small patch growing under kahikatea in the foothills of the Rimutaka Range. It is a very small entity (see the second last photograph) that has confused me as to just exactly what it is. There is no brown staining on the bottom part of the leaves. L. squalida, L. dispersa and L. tenella are found beside lake Wairarapa about a km away.
I have added a couple of new photographs of L. squalida growing in a seepage about 100m away which shows the hairs on the frond as opposed to the glabrous nature of the entity in question
Grown on there are fronds with brown staining.

cellphone is 16cm, so tallest plant just a little taller. Seems like flowering is over, given some have already deployed and expended capsules (photo 8). Reopened a flower with fingernail.

Males were seen "fighting" with each other and being very possessive of the smaller females.

Several adult birds roaming around and feeding near the high tide line where there is a lot of seaweed washed up. They are very tame, walking up to within 1.5 m (and closer) if you stay still. The last few images show one bird's reaction to a NZ falcon flying overhead; see

Field observation: https://inaturalist.nz/observations/47076027
Locally common.
Glabrous. Seeds per capsule c. 8 (so more than the 3 given for Luzula by the Bodmin key).
Some flattened leaves arising at mid-length of flowering stems. (But no basal rosette of flattened leaves as with Juncus planifolius.)
No sign of joints.
Rhizome creeping.
Some resemblance to Juncus brachycarpus, but that is not meant to be in the area, and I can't see joints in the stems or leaves, even when I use my imagination.
