On planted summersweet (Clethra alnifolia)
Very abundant foraging on open ground in dense flatwoods
This photo was taken directly after Hurricane Sally affected the area with 30+ inches of rain and high wind speeds. This P. badius colony fractioned their nest into 60+ different entrance holes, something that I’ve never seen with this species, which normally only has 1-3 nest entrances. I wonder if it is some sort of survival strategy against flooding. This colony has lived in this location for several years now.
