Purple-brown stalk almost 12" tall and about the thickness of a small ladies thumb. The stalk reminded me of an asparagus. The sort of fuzzy redish-purple part was at the base and I included a picture of the top. It was growing in the woods alongside an old wood fence post. Fairly shady there.
Berm on artificial island. Large shoots, no brown striping but leafy vines at base appear to be Smilax smallii. Not a typical place for this but everything here is disturbed.
