Northern Horsemussel (Modiolus modiolus)

Description

The Horse Mussel is found from the Arctic to New Jersey in subtidal regions. They are a large mussel, with a brown-black periostracum covered with hairs. The hinge on the shell lack teeth, but can be identified by the bluish black color and iridescent inner shell.

Description

This organism was found alongside other fouling organisms on a lobster trap's outer bars. These colonial organisms clumped together for protection and for the sharing of resources. The star-shaped pattern is unique to the species.
