1969-70 the beginning

as a boy I started with summer camps, observing birds, plants and insects. Started to use holidays with my parents for collecting insects.

first collection items were skulls, stones, spiders and insects. My mum was horrified, so I had to leave it all outside my room

I learned how to pin insects and label them correctly with date and location

an old butterfly collector in Luzern, Mr. R.Buholzer, gave me a few tropical butterflies

in the Nendaz area (Valais, Switzerland)

in the Airolo-Biasca area (Ticino, Switzerland)

Oh I love this so much! You for sure found your passion! I started with rearing mosquitoes in our garden when I was about 5 (and back than thought I was the first person to realize that they actually are born out of the water :-)) - much to the dismay of my mother, but she still alwas encouraged me :-)

Excellent. Thank you so much for sharing your logbook and photos. There are times these days, especially now that I live in a remote part of Portugal, that I wonder if I am the only person left with a passion for natural history, but iNat always reminds me otherwise.
Your 1969 photos remind me of my own childhood in the very different landscape of south London. I remember that about that time my parents took me to Jersey in the Channel Islands - the first time I had been on an aeroplane. At airport security the official took the dissecting kit out of my hand luggage, complete with scalpels, razor blades and other sharp instruments. “What is this for?” she asked. “For preparing flower specimens for my herbarium, obviously” I replied. She accepted that as reasonable and I was allowed to continue on to the aircraft.
Thank you also for valuable identifications. Neil

Atento saludo.
