An approach to the phytosociology of scrub in deforested areas in the west of Tres Cantos, Madrid, Spain

The scrub vegetation in the Tres Cantos wilderness area to the west corresponds fundamentally to substitution stages of the Junipero oxycedry-Quercetum rotundifoliae climax forest of dry upper Meso-Mediterranean bioclimate on acid soils that, in the past, must have continued with the Pardo vegetation. The substitution stages are very fragmented, overlapping and established on a mosaic of land dedicated to grazing and crops that are now abandoned. Cytiso scoparii-Retametum sphaerocarpae clearly predominates over Rosmarino-Cistetum ladaniferi. In the first case, both Retama sphaerocarpa and Cytisus scoparius are very visible and in the second case Cistus ladanifer is almost absent, although in the Guadarrama areas, Juniperos oxycedrus is much more present than corresponds to the association with Retama sphaerocarpa.

We recognized in the territory 26 of the 47 taxa corresponding to inventories carried out in related territories (55.3%) in the case of Cytiso scoparii-Retametum sphaerocarpae. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/111837179

Given that areas with decapitated and sandy soils are frequent and are established between areas of more developed soil, it is likely that both associations have the possibility of being re-established in the future.

The climax of Junipero oxycedry-Quercetum rotundifoliae, since there are holm oaks and junipers loose or in small groups, could also be established if future climatic conditions allow it.
