NATIONAL MOTH WEEK

.

I found in a Moquilea tomentosa tree what appeared to be a mealy bug eggs sack. I opened the eggs sack and some tiny, delicate pupae began to jump. I placed them in a ventilated container and, days later, small mosquitoes emerged from these pupae.

A few years ago I found the remains of a small transparent pupa stuck to a plant in a backyard. I found it interesting the possibility of that being the host plant of some incredible butterfly. I took the plant to my backyard and planted it. Then I found out that the plant is Solanum diphyllum, Solanaceae. A few years later, I found the first Episcada hymenaea caterpillars on this plant. I had the opportunity to record the biological cycle of this fantastic species, which I present here, now.

The mystery of flies that make foam - O mistério das moscas que fazem espuma

Me enviaram, no Twitter, @mtwe82 , registros de algumas espumas misteriosas encontradas no mamoeiro.

Seriam moscas do gênero Nausigaste?

Sent me on Twitter (@ mtwe82), records of some mysterious foams found in papaya tree. I had no idea what the foams were. I investigated all the possibilities, including if they could be foamed eggs of amphibians or Cercopidae nymphs. The person who sent me the photos of the foams sent me another photo later, showing that the foams had hardened. Everything seemed much more mysterious, the possibility of an amphibian or Cercopidae was ruled out.

Later, the same person, @ MtWe82, sent me images of a wasp parasitizing the foam. I was super intrigued. I researched and discovered that the wasp was Dirhinus, which are fly parasitoids. That would be a very important point in this mystery, the white foam would be from some fly. I did several researches, without success, no flies seemed to be able to make such foam, like a cocoon for the protection of its pupa. I sent the images to several people, including a Facebook group about Hymenoptera, but no one was able to say anything relevant that would lead to more accurate identification.

Later, in a Facebook entomology group, a member named Edgar Dias Ferreira posted some foams he found at his home, in a papaya tree. I immediately identified the foams as being identical to the ones I was investigating. I contacted Edgar Dias Ferreira immediately and asked for more information and helped him to collect two of those foams, without damaging them and placing them in an appropriate place to see what would come out of them. Meanwhile, the person who marked me in the foams on Twiiter also collected one of the mysterious foams and placed it in a container.

From both the foams of the person on Twitter and Edgar from the Facebook entomology group, flies appeared to be of the same species. The mystery was then solved, or part of it. The foams are made by larvae of flies of the Syrphidae family, probably larvae fed on papaya tissues. The other part of everything remains unknown. Were they flies of the genus Nausigaste? How do the larvae live and how do they produce this foam? The foam is a cocoon to protect the pupae from the fly?

Here, in my backyard, the larvae prefer the Belamcanda chinensis plant, where some snails like to hide the dead leaves of the plant and enjoy the humidity that this region of the plant offers. When the larvae are mature, they use a liquid that is secreted by the region at the end of the abdomen, and stick to the speared leaves of Belamcanda chinensis. Days later the adults emerge and the mating happens. The eggs are rounded, yellow and smooth. Most likely they are deposited attached to the lower part of the plants. Adults don't seem to eat.

National Moth Week - Mimallo amilia

This is a story about a moth that I love very much, the moth of the species Mimallo amilia, Mimallonidae. During the darkness of the night, a female moth struggles to leave its pupa. When the female moth is able to break free, it looks for a place to spread its wings and dry them. Then the moth begins to emit chemical signals to attract a sexual partner. Nearby, on the other side of the forest, a male recognizes the signs of pheromones imitated by the female and flies on his encounter. The male approaches the female and copulation begins with both hanging from the plant, the female above and the male below. Copulation can last all night, until the next morning, for several hours. After the male separates from the female, he flies to another place to rest, his task is accomplished, but the female still needs to advance in her reproductive drive for survival. The female moth looks for host plants, until it finds an available Psidium shrub and starts laying eggs. The female Mimallo flies around the plant, leaving a single solitary egg on the edge of each Psidium leaf. The eggs are white and look like grains of rice. Days after laying, the eggs look dark now, the little brown caterpillars of Mimallo are ready to hatch. The caterpillar migrates to the edge of the leaf and begins to create a small shelter, wrapping the leaf like a small straw and tying it with silk. Many caterpillars take shelter as soon as they hatch, but Mimallo is spectacular; while the other caterpillars throw their poop away, Mimallo keeps his poop and groups it with silk until it forms his sustainable shelter. This use begins when the caterpillar is a few millimeters. Initially, it just wraps and ties the edge of the leaf with silk. Later, the small balls of excrement material are adhered to. Mimallo spends several weeks in the shelter, in complete solitude and darkness. Going out just to feed or change shelter, when the shelter no longer serves you. Many weeks pass. The Mimallocaterpillar survived predators and parasitism. It pupate inside her poop cocoon, only to emerge like a beautiful moth in shades of blue and purple gray. Male and female have sexual dimorphism and are equally beautiful. Both like to rest horizontally, with the abdomen lowered and the wings raised, closed like a magic book full of stories of nature.

Backyard observation - NMW - National Moth Week - Citheronia laocoon

The Citheronia laocoon moth, even though it is an extraordinary species, whose adults have a beautiful contrast of yellow and brown on their wings, does not escape this human concept.

As lagartas empupam no solo.

Mating of Citheronia laocoon occurs during the night, when male and female are active. During the day the adults remain stationed on the plants. At night, the female mimics strong chemical pheromone signals to attract the male. The male approaches the female and copulation takes place. The copula can be long and last about 24 hours. After mating, femas fly in search of host plants. The females of Citheronia laocoon usually lay isolated eggs on the leaves of the plants. A few days later the babies are born, to start a life of several confrontations until adulthood.

Backyard observation - NMW - National Moth Week

Rothschildia arethusa

Translator
Wasps are poorly understood and very much hated. Few people understand their indisputably important role in ecosystems, their ecological relationships with other insects, spiders and plants. As the ovipositor has been modified into a stinger, which can result in a painful sting, the Polistes paper wasps are highly feared by humans, but will only be aggressive if they feel that their nests are threatened. I will talk about the paper wasp Polistes - Vespidae - Maribondo-Caboclo, quite common in Brazil.

Translator
Practically synanthropic, being able to fly very close to humans, and even use our clothespins as raw material for their nests. They are specialized paper manufacturers, capable of transforming raw wood into resistant paper nests. The nest is open and shaped like an inverted umbrella. It is built above the ground and can be found hanging over eaves, garage ceilings, fences, attics and other protected areas.

Translator
The construction of the nest begins with a suitable support - in a window, for example. The queen adds her pulp to the stand. As the wet cellulose fibers dry, they become a strong paper filament, where the nest is suspended. The nest material consists of a mixture of chewed wood and the salivary secretions of female wasps. The nest can be started by a mated queen wasp that builds a small number of cells and in which it lays an egg. A queen uses her jaws to scrape pieces of wood fiber from fences, logs or even cardboard. She then breaks the wood fibers in her mouth, using saliva and water to weaken them. The wasp flies to the chosen nest site with its mouth full of soft paper pulp.

Translator
The eggs hatch and the emerging larvae will continue to develop and grow within the cell. The queen will fetch food outside the nest and bring the food back to the growing larvae until pupation. All emerging adults will be working women with undeveloped reproductive organs. These new workers will take on the responsibility of feeding all other larvae and building the nest more, while the queen will devote all her time to laying eggs

Translator
The nests rarely exceed 200 insects. The duration of a colony can last approximately six to seven months and depends mainly on the reproductive capacity of the queen. Eggs are presumed to hatch in about two weeks. Fat removed from insects and nectar will feed the larvae in progress. These larvae become adults in about two months from the time of egg laying.

Translator
These wasps can tear caterpillars accurately, neglecting intestines and skin, and making a small ball with the fat it removes to feed the larvae in the nest. Queens and workers can perform the foraging task: look for food for the larvae. Both the queen and the workers chew food brought by the foragers. The macerate is divided with the companions, who then feed each larva.

Translator
These wasps can throw larvae out of the nest with problems, such as lesions in the jaws. Or feed the most successful larvae with the larvae themselves in the nest. Warning sign If the wasp is alarmed, it can release a strong odor in its nest; the odor of the poison triggers alarm responses in its companions. Better not to approach or touch the nests

When the artificial lights go out, dozens of small bright spots can appear in the darkness. The spectacle of bioluminescence is increasingly rare. It is not uncommon for people to miss the fireflies that were part of their childhood. Several factors, including excessive light pollution and destruction of natural environments, contributed to the decline of these animals in Brazil.

The native species of the genus Aspisoma (Lampyridae) are one of the most common that I observed in an urban backyard. I recorded almost the entire cycle, mating, larva, adults and pupae, except the eggs, which must be deposited on the ground. I didn't see any adults eating. And it seems that they are unpalatable.

Aspisoma larvae are more prosperous in times of rain, when their food is also prosperous. I usually find the larvae fixed upside down on the undersides of the plants, also on the wire fence.

One of the most surprising things was to discover that Aspisoma larvae feed on slug and small snails, including the invasive species Bradybaena similaris. If people knew the importance of these animals as nutrients for fireflies, they could stop fighting them vigorously, even with poison.

A natureza é dinâmica. Tudo nela importa.

What people need to understand is that it is not enough to like ladybugs and to hate and destroy their staple foods, which are aphids and mealybug. With fireflies, the idea is the same: they need slug and snails, they need to exercise their biological needs to get out. Nature is dynamic. Nature is not just made for what we like. Nature is all that is there. Everything in nature matters
