@terrymcintosh I am trying to sort out those new species additions you mentioned but I have some blanks and I can't see the difference between papillosimma and subpapillosimma.
@rambryum This is from Kellman's key to Syntrichia in the northern hemisphere:
"39. Medial cells with 1 branched, stellate or antleroid papilla, papillae at back of upper costa stellate-branched or bifurcate, rarely simple, 2.5-7.5 μm tall .........................................................................................S. papillosissima
Medial cells with more than 1, usually bifurcate, rarely stellate branched. Papillae on the back of the upper costa simple, 2.5-5 μm tall ........................................................................................................................S. subpapillosissima"
