I have a broad interest in natural history but trained as an entomologist and specialised in ants. Most of my work on ants was undertaken while working as a curator/scientist at the South African Museum (now part of Iziko Museums of South Africa) from 1989 to 2003. From 2003, my focus changed to museum administration and ant research took a back seat. I took early retirement from Iziko from April 2018 and am reviving my interests in ant mating behaviour, the identification of male ants, and recording ecological interactions (predation, parasitism, herbivory, pollination, etc.). I also love wildlife photography (mainly macro) and think iNaturalist is a wonderful way of making wildlife photography useful for research.
