I am a retired CSIRO scientist in the field of radio astronomy with a Ph.D. in physics from the Department of Astrophysics at the University of Sydney. At CSIRO/ATNF, among other things, I specialised in writing software for analysing astronomical data from the Multibeam system on the Parkes Radio Telescope, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array at Narrabri.

I have been fascinated with cicadas from an early age when I built up a small collection, mostly of specimens donated by my class mates. I initially became involved with iNaturalist as part of "The Great Cicada Blitz" project. While I still consider that to be one of my primary targets, nowadays I'm happy to contribute to the collective effort of gathering data on a wide range of species, mostly insects, as this meshes with my new-found interest in macro photography. Through that, I've discovered an interest in flies and moths, and just about any small critter of which I can take a decent photo.

My camera gear consists of a Nikon D7500 DSLR with Tamron 90mm macro lens (Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD to be precise). For larger subjects I also use a Panasonic Lumix ZS110 (equivalent to TZ110 in Australia). I rely on GIMP, currently v2.8.22) for post-processing, including focus stacking.
