Be on the lookout for Beavers in San Mateo county!

Dear iNat San Mateo County participants -

Today, while searching for rare birds along Butano Creek in Pescadero, I met a researcher, Brendan, who is trying to determine the status of Beaver in our county. Any records - including historical data and private communication - would help him. I couldn't recall any sightings here, and he checked the data base to confirm this. Post to this journal if you see beavers, or signs of beavers. Thanks for marshaling the power of citizen-science!

I was wondering about this when I was at Butano Creek last week. I also think Gazos Creek would be ideal beaver habitat with little human conflict. I have never know there to be beavers in San Mateo County, but it would be an interesting thing to see.

I heard tail slapping and saw a beaver swimming in Crystal Springs R. in 1975 at dawn. It was in the area on the west shore San Mateo Creek. I hiked from my home on Kings Mtn starting around 2 am and arrived at my destination San Mateo Creek at around dawn. The tail slapping really really scared me because I was on high alert for being caught where I wasn't suppose to be. I was walking along the shoreline in the morning twilight. I have a very vivid memory of the observation. It was in this area: https://goo.gl/maps/3LKSn1XHif6srFvS8
