Sequoia Park Zoo Bioblitz 2023's Journal

May 26, 2023

Thank you!! and Results!

Hello everyone!

The Zoo’s first bioblitz on May 21 was a huge success! Our bioblitz team of ~35 people categorized 206 (!!) different taxa (or types of organisms). The most popular species recorded were redwood (of course!), leatherleaf fern, Douglas iris, and evergreen huckleberry. A fan favorite was the ensatina salamander! Teresa950 shared the MOST observations - 98! Wow! And Leemb found the most species... 57! Great job!

We want to thank everyone who participated. We could not have asked for a more positive, fun group! We hope you will come back next year for round two. It was great to meet all of you, so please stay in touch!

We plan to host this free event annually so that we can help monitor the health of this precious redwood forest. This bioblitz was held as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA)’s Party for the Planet – a celebration that encompasses Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, and World Oceans Day.

Looking forward to seeing you again at the Sequoia Park Zoo!

Best wishes,
Ruth Mock
Director of Conservation and Research
