A catalogue of the categorised invasive plants and alien weeds that have been found in Korsman Bird Sanctuary.
A couple of indigenous species are invasive and are added.
Many factors bring weeds into the Sanctuary. Mostly, the storm water inlets which drain the catchment area. Some cross a railway line where the railway reserve is a disaster area of invasives. Open plots within the area are rife with noxious weeds. Gardens within the old, established surrounding suburb feed birds seeds. Residents possibly bring home strange plants form overseas which establish themselves here, and even the scientists can't identify them. The airport, a few kilometres away, has a flourishing pompom weed population, and we are in the predominant wind direction to carry seeds.
Certain areas of the Sanctuary are degraded from spraying of reeds and bulrushes after they were allowed to establish themselves in the grassland and the land owners did not respond. So, as volunteers looking after the Sanctuary, we are challenged from many directions. Fortunately, through consistent effort and using funds raised from the community, we are turning the corner and many areas have rehabilitated.
