Battle of the Boroughs update: Manhattan is currently at the top for number of observations, species, and observers. Let's see if the rest of the boroughs can pull ahead tomorrow!

Torrey Botanical Society Field Trip: Hunter Island at Pelham Bay Park

Description: Hunter Island is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the city. We will see the amazing variety of native wildflowers, migrating birds in the spring, geology, and scenic views on Hunter Island. Make sure you dress properly for the weather and the risk of ticks as deer are abundant in this part of the Bronx. We will occasionally traverse difficult terrains such as rocky shoreline and brushy thickets. The trip will be led by Zihao Wang and last around 2h30 between 10:30am and 1pm, please come prepared with lunch/snacks, water, insect repellent, sun protection as well as hand lens and binoculars.

Torrey Botanical Society Field Trip: Bronx Park North

Description: Bronx Park is best known for containing the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden, but there is an additional northern portion which is maintained by NYC Parks and open to the public. This area, which is a designated Forever Wild preserve, is one of the few remaining natural streamside landscapes in the city. Some portions are inundated by invasives, but there are also many interesting and beautiful native herbs, trees, and shrubs to be found. We will meet at the park entrance at E 204th Street (40.87057, -73.87618) and make our way along both sides of the river. The trip will be led by Lydia Paradiso. Make sure to wear sturdy, waterproof shoes, and bring lunch/snacks. Extra hand lens will be available to borrow. This field trip will be held during the City Nature Challenge, so we encourage you to bring your smart phones or cameras to document the life we see during our trip, and contribute your observations to the total NYC count!

Description: Green-Wood is a great place to get out and explore nature! Expert naturalists will be on-site to help participants collect data on birds, insects, fungi, and plants at Green-Wood for the City Nature Challenge. Genspace educators will help kids and their adults explore nature up-close at microscopy activity stations. There will also be an interactive experience about the future of trees at Green-Wood led by Clarinda Mac Low and Carolyn Hall, Genspace creative programs coordinators and the creators of Sunk Shore.
