August 7th - Reading and comprehension of dipteran scientific material

We're happy to announce another online meeting! Here are the details:

This week we'll be looking at the Manual of Nearctic Diptera to get some practice reading serious material and being able to understand scientific keys that aren't necessarily user friendly. We may also take some time to look at more recent publications like the Manual of Afrotropical Diptera, which have keys much like the MND, but with illustrations.

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

If you want to follow along:

Please leave a comment either to let us know if you're planning to come or to subscribe to be notified of future events! Questions are also welcome.

The Zoom meeting will open at 8 PM EDT on Sunday the 7th.

Added manually. When I click the either of the two Google Calendar links, I get
"Could not find the requested event."

Hmmm... I can't get it to work - will take it off of this one, maybe we can troubleshoot on Sunday.

I added it manually to my calendar, so I'm good for Sunday!

Yep, just not sure how far we'll get so I didn't put them in the post :)

I downloaded the Manual of Nearctic Diptera pdf versions a long time ago but I did not know the Manual of Afrotropical Diptera has photographs. I had never looked at it. Therefore the first thing I did after reading your journal entry was to look for it online. It is a remarkable document. ;-)

I have a question, if filters are removed there is also a revised Vol 2. Do we download the revised Vol 2 in lieu of the original Vol 2, Stick with original Vol 2, or are both volumes relevant?

Posted by judya over 1 year ago

Stick with the original Vol. 2 in my opinion. To be honest, I have no clue what the other one is, I never checked.
