Deciduous decorticated wood, edge of swampy area. I have found this fungus for several years around the same spot. It was ID by DNA as G. underwoodii. KOH turned it deep red wine. Everything is concolorous.

Description
Single large mushroom growing from termite nest up a tree. Cap convex, thick, pale yellow, woolly, with woolly covering curving over nearly all the way to where it was attached to stem. I first noticed this mushroom forming two weeks ago, but it never opened all the way out to expose its gills - the coverings remaining from the top seemed to close in hiding them even further. But the gills are dark and not attached to the stem. The stem is thick and the same pale yellow woolly appearance as the cap, but the top half of the stem above the ring is smoother. [First photo is from today - others are from when the mushroom was newer.]

I can't remember the precise location, but there were several of these at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Just get on your hands and knees and look closely when you start seeing lots of Douglas-fir cones on the ground.
