This is in the natural forest area of NY Botanic Garden, and does not appear to be planted. The Garden has a clearly planted specimen of this species but it is quite far from here (1000ft?) in a different section. Thus I think this is an escaped "volunteer". It has a few babies underneath.

LEAVES:
-7 to 9 leaflets
BARK:
-tight bark
FRUIT:
-nuts with thick husk that splits completely to the base (husk much thicker than bitternut, similar to thickness or slightly thinner than on typical shagbarks)
-smooth, un-ribbed nut with sharp point and thin, brittle shell
-nut meat is sweet-tasting with pleasant flavour
TWIGS & BUDS:
-thick twigs (thicker than what is typical for either of the parent species)
-large, naked buds covered in velvety hairs
NOTE:
The 6th picture shows the twig of this putative Carya x laneyi in between each of the parent species. A pure C. ovata twig is placed on the left, and a pure C. cordiformis twig is placed on the right.

The images shown were taken at the Purdue Electron Microscopy Facility after I had the opportunity to isolate and name this phage. It is now listed in the Actinobacteriophage Database under the name "Zigan". This phage was isolated from a soil sample and grew on the host Mycobacterium smegmatis mc²155. It has not been sequenced yet, as of October 2020.
