I was walking through hemlock/white pine woods when the pungent musty smell of a porcupine stopped me in my tracks. I have smelled it on dead porcupines and mildly in dens, but never strong in open woods. I looked up and it was 15-20 right over my head. The strong odor was in an area only about 10 ft in diameter. Light but noticeable odor was in an area roughly 20 ft in diameter.

This is a preserved species.
Note. After checking an older notebook I found that my
Daughter who at the time was home schooled and found the this animal already deceased and the date was July 12, 2005.

The first picture is a small sample placed on a log to get a better picture, the second is where I found it growing. Found in a swampy area with sphagnum and other mosses nearby. Many skunk cabbages, as well as a fair amount of either Cypripedium (lady slipper), or veratrum viride (false hellbore), I am unsure which.
