What

Three Birds Orchid (Triphora trianthophoros ssp. trianthophoros)

Observer

bill_spiers1

Date

August 2020

Description

Alligator Hill, Sleeping Bear Dunes. Deep pockets of dead leaves. No competition. Blossomed earlier than historically reported judging by the immature seed capsules. Blossomed on August 2, 2021 and August 11, 2022. Began emerging on Aug. 9, 2022 after heavy rains and cool down to 50 at night. Although there is almost infinite habitat, the plants populate a rather small area. There appears to be an old road in the forest leading up to the plants that may have been part of "Day Estates" from the 20's and 30's. Was this part of a much larger population that was destroyed 100 years ago? Very few plants have emerged in 2023 as of August 10.

Unfortunately not a good photo but after a first response of being excited thinking I saw a pine marten, I quickly realized no it’s a Fisher!
