3/31/2022: updating this observation from genus Zale to Zale lunata based on observation of similar moth by @kalamurphyking on 3/18/2022.
He squirms around when disturbed and 4th photo looks like he's trying to hide his head. Lovely camo colors. I would like to save him, and watch him do his chrysalis to adult metamorphosis, but I don't know when or what to feed him until then if I don't know what he is - and he's not telling.
11/6/2021 update - while I was deciding what to do with him, he crawled to the top of my little Bug House and cocooned himself to the roof. He's about half as long as he was before. I wonder if he will be OK in the kitchen at room temperature. Maybe I should put him outside where he won't be fooled by central heat, so he can tell when spring arrives.
11/21/2021 update - while showing some kids my crystalis, we noticed he has hatched into brown moth. Still can't ID the species.
