Osservato da una distanza di circa 40 metri.
Si è mosso lungo il limitare del bosco e ho potuto osservarlo per un paio di minuti, prima che sparisse dalla mia vista entrando nella fitta vegetazione al limitare del bosco, in questo lasso di tempo sono riuscito a scattare diverse foto dell'esemplare, dalla finestra del balcone, in modo da non spaventarlo.
Ne ho stimato la lunghezza totale a 80 cm, l'esemplare presenta un manto bruno-grigiastro, tendente al marrone chiaro nella zona della testa. Sul dorso sono presenti macchie e screziature nerastre; sulle zampe invece sono presenti delle striature, che circondano quasi tutto l'arto in quelle anteriori e la parte frontale degli arti posteriori.
La parte inferiore del corpo e la zona interna degli arti sono di colore biancastro nella parte anteriore del corpo e tendente al marrone chiaro nella parte posteriore.
Presenta una linea nera che parte nella zona scapolare, corre lungo la colonna vertebrale e arriva alla base della coda.
La coda presenta una serie di anelli neri separati tra loro; e l'estremità è completamente nera.
Viste queste caratteristiche credo possa trattarsi di felis silvestris; un esemplare giovane, in cui le striature e screziature nere sono ancora ben visibili; tuttavia la dimensione della coda (che nei gatti selvatici geneticamente puri dovrebbe essere "a forma di clava") mi fa pensare che potrebbe essere un ibrido tra felis catus e felis silvestris o un gatto inselvatichito.
In zona sono abbastanza comuni i gatti inselvatichiti, e ogni tanto mi capita di fotografarli con le fototrappole, ho anche visto esemplari con una colorazione abbastanza simile a questa, ma in tutti questi esemplari gli anelli della coda erano fusi assieme nella linea mediana del dorso.
Inoltre i boschi maturi di latifoglie della zona, ricchi di zone rocciose e micromammiferi sembrerebbero l'habitat ideale per il gatto selvatico europeo. Ho anche ricevuto una segnalazione di un presunto gatto selvatico nella zona, avvenuta l'inverno scorso a circa 2 km da dove ho scattato le foto.
In questo caso mi è stata descritta anche la coda grossa e tozza tipica di felis silvestris, ma purtroppo in assenza di foto non ho potuto aggiungere l'osservazione.
Per questi motivi credo che non sia da escludere la presenza di esemplari ibridi tra felis catus e felis silvestris.
