This hawk seems like its missing its tail??
I've never seen this behavior before. I thought it was a turtle at first glance. It stayed in this position until I had completely passed by, them emerged an flew toward the clutch observed nearby.

A green chiton attached to a half crab. We observed this alien looking commensal beast while undertaking an intertidal survey on the reefs off Hawera. It made us jump when we first turned over the rock.

I had found the ootheca while doing yard work and it ended up detached from it's host twig so I pinned it under the slender handle of the lantern hanging on the shepherd's hook then was lucky enough to catch the hatch.

An unfortunate accident caused the death of a cottonmouth. Inside the snake, there was a northern water snake. Inside the water snake, there was a sculpin. Food chain in action!

(Larger, darker snake) My mom texted me a photo of two snakes she found hanging out together while she was watering plants. ~3.5 hours later, they were still in the same area and I took some more photos. Sometimes the larger snake would move away a foot or two, and eventually the smaller one would slither over to it again. (will create a duplicate post for the other snake)

Drama. These guys all normally get along pretty well, but here a squirrel decided to start something and nearly got kicked in the head as reward. Moments later they were back to munching sunflower seeds side-by-side again.
