Red-marked Pachodynerus Wasp (Pachodynerus erynnis) attacking a Gulf Fritillary caterpillar (Dione vanillae). I observed this wasp search for prey on a tangle of bean and passion vines, attack this caterpillar and fall to a fence below, and then fly to other spots (probably because I was disturbing it by photographing it) while it worked to subdue the caterpillar. The caterpillar struggled extensively, the wasp appeared to sting the caterpillar several times, and the wasp eventually appeared to begin chewing the caterpillar or perhaps repositioning its bite to carry the caterpillar more easily. This may be a new record of prey species for Pachodynerus erynnis, although I'm not sure about that.

My garden gifted me with one of the most Exquisite and rarely seen little metalmark moths on my 80th birthday last Friday. These gorgeous little creatures, the Diva moth-- Hemerophila diva, are only 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch long. My wonderful Florida Keys Thoroughwort, Koanophyllon villosum, is a magnet for these beauties.

These were somewhat heavily infesting twigs of sweetgum in the area. Photo series starts with microscope pictures of the beetles, then a shot of the twig broken open to reveal the beetle and her gallery, then the entrance holes in the twig, then the wilted twig, then the trees with wilted twigs visible. Sort of walking backwards through the observation. Individual shown is a female, 1.6 mm long.
