Tentatively, based on Bugguide. Gorgeous fly! Large, estimated 12 mm or so, eyes sparsely pilose. Size and dark legs should rule out Laetodon. Habitat was dry mixed oak/pitch pine woodland on glacial outwash soil.
Observed this Large-tailed Aphideater feeding on a San Diego Wirelettuce (Stephanomeria diegensis) flower.
This looks right - not sure if this is within the known distribution. Perhaps @jhskevington can enlighten?
This small male with the mostly separated dorsal markings gave me pause. I first thought it might be Parasyrphus tarsatus, but things don't appear quite right for that. @billdean Do you agree?
Yellow antennae, yellow pro- and metacoxae and the bands on tergite 3 and 4 are deeply emarginate. These are what point me to this species.
male and female both found on a sap wound on an elm in my backyard. With these i’ve now collected all 4 species of myolepta in eastern NA, all in my yard
on the trunk of a tree in oak woodland
In my yard. Flying around and landing on sunlit cedar leaves
I had E. abiskoensis later in the summer of 2016, and I think that's quite possibly a label for this one. It is a little more orange-toned on the abdomen markings, so I would like extra eyes on it.
