Description

tiny bagworm found on a single leaf of Olearia virgata. I guess not Rhathamictis perspera as an Olearia one (though not recorded on O. virgata) per Brian Patrick's publication: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/287164039_Lepidoptera_of_small-leaved_divaricating_Olearia_in_New_Zealand_and_their_conservation_priority since Dr Robert mentioned the case being evenly granular: https://inaturalist.nz/observations/163781263

Description

Spotted halfway through the walk, a tree with numerous mined leaves. Would later confirm the adult leafminers flying about. Presumably this as it seems there's only one leaf miner on Olearia virgata.

a reasonable consolation prize for an otherwise very unsuccessful trip. On the way out of Waimarino Scientific Reserve which is packed with Olearia virgata, I came across a large tree. Brushing past it, I saw something tiny flying off in a moth like fashion. After giving the branches a few shake, a eventually managed to get a couple of photos of this one - very hard to track them visually, and need them to land somewhere accessible. Would continue until I did better: https://inaturalist.nz/observations/215228691

Brushing past it, I saw something tiny flying off in a moth like fashion. After getting a couple of photos of the first one to confirm it was a moth (https://inaturalist.nz/observations/215228687), I just walked around the tree giving branches a shake, and sent perhaps a dozen of these flying. Eventually managed to catch one - very hard to track them visually, and need them to land somewhere accessible.

over a period of a week, 4 of these appeared on the bedroom wall. the carpet is wool but had no obvious damage; would they have been climbing to an elevated place to pupate? The 2 pictures show the same cocoon with the grub emerging from each end; so either it was able to turn round in what looks like a tight space, or there were 2 of them in there.

Lepidoptera survey of Te Ahu Patiki / Mt Herbert. Day-flying moths searched for around the top in tussock grassland, damp areas, and rocky bluffs. Night work done on forest fragments on the northern slopes between My Herbert and Mt Bradley. Forest fragments consisted of kowhai, totara, narrow-leaved lacebark, ribbonwood, amongst others. A diverse range of vines and lots of tree nettle (Urtica ferox) - a wonderful plant that supports many moth species - oh, and the red admiral. A stunning diversity of Lepidoptera and would love to return. Many thanks to Te Ahu Pātiki Charitable Trust.
