What

Coralroots (Genus Corallorhiza)

Date

July 2020

Description

7/12/20
Overcast, 60-60°F
Seen in evergreen woods near F lot
No green parts or leaves to plant, probably heterotrophic
Long red/purple stem

Topped with alternating red fruits that point down. When cut open fruits are white and pulpy, while being somewhat dry.

On end of fruit is the reminants of 6 petals or sepals, which have dried and turned brown

I collected a specimen that had already been bent over, it seemed to lack roots and the part I collected from under the soil was whitish and firm.

Other contender for ID was something in the
Corallorhiza genus, but the timing of the phenology fit better for Pyrola aphylla, as it is past it's flowering season and is known to fruit this time of year.
