Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta)

Observer

Description

Less chum than the last few times I’ve visited but still a lot, many under the bridge and up the falls, starting to see some around the outside of the hatchery and up the ladder. Seems to be less in the holding pool but still at least 20??

Lots of spawning behavior that I got good video of.

Listened to some older folks talking about fishing around the hatchery and how they used to send the caught salmon through the white tube on the hill that would suck them into the hatchery pool like a water slide. Seems like the hatchery has since discontinued this because the tube is dry and full of leaf litter.

It seems like all the chum have adipose fins, when I talked to the hatchery program manager last month they mentioned that they usually rely on otoliths and coded wire tags to identify salmon.
