A low (less than a meter tall) thicket at the edge of a dirt road. Leaves finely toothed, with veins that do not extend into the teeth. (Can be seen in the first photo).
Leaf blades partially expanded and somewhat folded during flowering, sparsely hairy, and strongly tinged with red-purple.
Last photo shows Hop Hornbeam leaf on left vs. Beech leaf on right. Thin, papery Hop Hornbeam leaves deteriorate almost completely over the winter whereas the more leathery, tough leaves of Beech do not.
On Quercus alba.
On soil at base of overturned tree. Photo 4 shows characteristic capsule. Orange peristome teeth divided halfway down into two hyaline papillose forks.
