Located on a rotting, downed tree trunk near the duck blind on the west side of the marsh at the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area in Sullivan County, NY. It was a very old sample and very fertile.

A sample of this lichen was collected under special permit from the New York State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and sent to the New York Botanical Garden in NYC. It was identified by Dr. James C. Lendemer as:

One of the few cup lichens that can be identified in the field without chemical tests. Look for the plate like squamules in and around the cups.

Description

Cladonia ochrochlora has soredia that appears only on the top 3/5 or so of the stalk and a smooth, corticate lower stalk as seen in the inset. Cladonia coniocraea has soredia down the entire stalk.

This sample was found on hardwood tree bases at Onteora Lake State Park, Kingston, NY.

A sample of this lichen was collected under special permit from the New York State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and sent to the New York Botanical Garden in New York City. It was identified by Dr. James C. Lendemer as:
Usnocetraria oakesiana (Tuck.) M.J.Lai & J.C.Wei
and retained in the Steere Herbarium. Sample ONT1036, catalogNumber 04275357
