Description

Located on hardwood bark in the woods above Alder Lake, Balsam Lake State Forest, Catskill Forest Preserve, NY, USA

A sample of this lichen was collected under special permit from the New York State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and sent to the New York Botanical Garden in New York City. It was identified by Dr. James C. Lendemer as:
Ochrolechia trochophora (Vain.) Oshio
and retained in the Steere Herbarium. Sample ALD-1026, catalogNumber 04275458.

Located on hardwood canopy branches on Slide Mountain, Catskill Forest Preserve, NY.

A sample of this lichen was collected under special permit from the New York State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and sent to the New York Botanical Garden in New York City. It was identified by Dr. James C. Lendemer as:
Ochrolechia mahluensis Räsänen
and retained in the Steere Herbarium. Sample SL3-1272, catalogNumber 04117019

Description

Often called Coral Saucer lichen due to the coral apothecia that are not always present as none are seen here in this sample.
Also called Yasuda's Crab-eye lichen due to the small podetia with a roundish top like a crabs eye on the stalk.

Located on mossy soil over rock at the John Burroughs Slabsides Nature Sanctuary, Esopus, NY.

A sample of this lichen was collected with permission of Joan Burroughs, and sent to the New York Botanical Garden in NYC, for laboratory identification. It was identified by Dr. James C. Lendemer as:
Ochrolechia yasudae Vain.,

and retained in the Steere Herbarium. It is posted on the CNALH database as sample SLB-1115, catalogNumber 04470738.

This actual sample can be located by “highlighting and then copying” the 8-digit catalogNumber listed above and then going to the CNALH website, https://lichenportal.org/portal/

  1. click on Search tab on upper left page
  2. click on Specimen Search on drop down menu
  3. click on checkmark to “Deselect all collections”
  4. scroll down page to select “only” from list - New York Botanical Garden(NY)
