Description

I'm thinking this is maybe X. dryophilus given the habitat and abundant growth of that species in the area at the time, but the light brownish cap is throwing me off (it's so different from the other X. dryophilus specimens I had found that day). Oak (mostly Q. agrifolia) riparian habitat.

Description

  • Found emerging from bark chip duff.
  • Substrate is tree root.
  • Stipe bases pointed due to growth in dense clusters radiating outward, younger fruit bodies to older fruit bodies (small to large).
  • Stipe ranges from 2 - 10 cm. long, < .05 - 2 cm. thick.
  • Partial veil present, splits and curls into skirt in older fruit bodies.
  • Very small scales on cap.
  • Velvety cap, cracks in cap in older specimens, no visible striations on cap.
