Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica)

Observer

katebolkin

Date

April 13, 2024 01:34 PM EDT

Description

  1. These Mertensia virginica where near or in bloom throughout Central Park. No signs of insect or wildlife visitors. These patches were blocked off by fencing to limit human interactions.
  2. This plant is native to the eastern US and Canada and is either of no conservation concern or threatened depending on area.
  3. Floral formula: *, Ca5, Co5 (fused), A5, G1 (ovary superior), schizocarp
  4. These plants are most known for the blue-purple flowers, where the 5 petals are fused into a tube that bloom in April-May. The flowers form in loose clusters and hang down, like a bell. Buds are pink-purple in color and become more blue as the flower mature. Leaves are smooth and round and emerge basally in early spring then become alternating as the plant grows. These plants prefer shadier areas.

Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata)

Observer

katebolkin

Date

April 13, 2024 01:33 PM EDT

Description

  1. This invasive garlic mustard was growing near the river in Central Park, NY. Unlike the other garlic mustard in the area, this patch was already in flower. There were no signs of insect visitors.
  2. This plant is invasive in the US and is originally from Europe and Asia. It is very abundant due its colonial spreading nature.
  3. Floral formula: *, Ca4, Co4, A6, G1 (ovary superior), silique
  4. I mainly identified this plant by the leaves that are triangular/kidney/heart shaped, toothed, and petiolate. Its most distinctive feature is the garlic odor released when crushing the leaves. Flowers are small and white and form in clusters on the top of the stem. They contain 4 petals and 6 stamens.
