on exposed silicic outcrop.
keyed out in Brodo & Sharnoff's Diploschistes key in LoNA.

thallus crustose, not pruinose, thick, light grayish-green, areolate; black, crater-like apothecia embedded in the thallus.

I don't think this species is known from NYC. it is not listed as a known lichen in the city in Allen & Lendemer's Urban Lichens (it does contain Diploschistes muscorum, but this isn't that), and it is absent from the city in iNat records. if my ID is correct then this would be the first in the city.

Description

When I go through the FNA key, I get Carex festucacea. However, upon looking at the perigynia and achene description, this plant appears too robust for festucacea. From FNA:

Perigynia spreading, pale green to yellowish brown, conspicuously 5-veined or more abaxially, veinless or mostly indistinctly or basally 2–4(–6)-veined adaxially, orbiculate to elliptic, plano-convex, 2.5–4.2 × 1.5–2.3(–2.5) mm, 0.4–0.6 mm thick, nearly leathery, margin flat, including wing 0.3–0.6 mm wide, smooth; beak green or light brown at tip, flat, ciliate-serrulate, abaxial suture with conspicuous white-hyaline margin, distance from beak tip to achene 0.8–1.7(–2) mm. Achenes ovate, 1.2–1.8 × 1–1.3 mm, 0.3–0.4 mm thick.

This plant has perigynia approx 3.6mm by 2.2mm on average (within range) but achenes 2.2mm wide and 1.5mm think (much larger than cited)...

Description

From the bark of downed cut up pine on the edge of woods. I am 99.9% sure this is the same species as the moss in ttps://www.inaturalist.org/observations/192451434, which came from the same group of sawed-up pine segments. The last photo is at 100x (11 microns per ocular unit) the others at 50X (30 microns/ ou) I did not get good views of leaves, as they are tight to the branches, but if there's a midrib, it ends way short of the tip. L. polycarpa as described in Ireland's Maritimes book has a midrib that ends short of the tip. McKnight and Rohrer say midrib of gracilescens is "very faint." Leaves are short, no more than 1 mm. They have long narrow tips. Stalks in my photos are 7-8 mm with capsules 2-3 mm.
Photos 5,6,8 and 9 are at 400x mag (2.2 microns per ocular unit)
photo 7 is at 100 x, about 11 microns per ocular unit
