🐟 Η τεράστια συμβολή των παρατηρήσεων των πολιτών στην επιστήμη αναδεικνύεται για άλλη μια φορά!

Σε πρόσφατη δημοσίευσή μας, παρουσιάσαμε αρκετές καταγραφές πέντε θαλάσσιων ειδών με περιορισμένα δεδομένα από την ανατολική Μεσόγειο Θάλασσα: Alectis alexandrina, Ranzania laevis, Dalatias licha, Lophotus lacepede και Sudis hyalina. Όλα αυτά τα αρχεία συλλέχθηκαν μέσα από μια συμμετοχική διαδικασία, με τη συμβολή και ψαράδων, δυτών, φωτογράφων, και επικυρώθηκαν από ταξινομικούς εμπειρογνώμονες του προγράμματος επιστήμης πολιτών «Σε ξενίζει? .... Μοιράσου το μαζί μας!!!».

Αυτή η μελέτη καλύπτει ένα σημαντικό κενό γνώσης σχετικά με την κατανομή αυτών των ειδών και υπογραμμίζει τον σημαντικό ρόλο της συμμετοχής των πολιτών ως εργαλείου για την επέκταση της γνώσης μας όσον αφορά τη θαλάσσια βιοποικιλότητα και τη διαχείριση της αλιείας.

Εκτιμήσαμε ότι η συμβολή των πολιτών-επιστημών αντιπροσωπεύει πάνω από το 45% του συνολικού αριθμού των δημοσιεύσεων που αφορούν τα παραπάνω είδη και περισσότερο από το 58% του συνολικού αριθμού των δημοσιεύσεων που έγιναν την τελευταία δεκαετία στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο!

🐟 The immense contribution of citizen observations to science has been showcased once again!

In our recent peer-reviewed publication we presented several records of five data-limited native fish species from the eastern Mediterranean Sea: Alectis alexandrina, Ranzania laevis, Dalatias licha, Lophotus lacepede, and Sudis hyalina. All of these records were collected by a participatory process, involving fishers, divers photographers, and validated by taxonomic experts of the citizen science programme “Is it Alien to you? Share it!!!”.

This study fills an important knowledge gap regarding the distribution of these species and it highlights the important role of citizen participation as a tool for extending marine biodiversity knowledge and fisheries management.

We estimated that the contribution of citizen science accounts for over 45% of the total number of the studied species published records and more than 58% of the total number of published records during the last decade in the eastern Mediterranean Sea!
