ABOUT ME
I am a self-taught/self-studied botany hobbyist living in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. I use iNaturalist to learn about plants and to help others to do the same. Please feel free to interact with me in any way that aligns with one of those two goals.

I regularly observe the wild plants that appear in my suburban yard each year, with a focus on morphology and phenology. I also try to be attentive to fauna, funga, and other forms of life along the way, but plants are my primary interest.

In addition to adding my own observations, I aim to add an identification to all of Nebraska's plant observations. I also add courser identifications to Nebraska's non-plant observations to help them reach the attention of those who can identify them more finely.

PLANT IDENTIFICATION
The resources I consult on a regular basis are two floras and a plant glossary:

  • Flora of North America North of Mexico [Online | Print]
  • The Flora of Nebraska, 2nd edition, 2011, by Robert Kaul, David Sutherland, and Steven Rolfsmeier. [Print]
  • The Kew Plant Glossary, 2nd edition, 2020, by Henk Beentje. [Print]

I am familiar with Nebraska's species of the following plant families: Urticaceae (nettles).

I want to become more familiar with Nebraska's representatives of: Molluginaceae (1-5); Phytolaccaceae (1-5); Portulacaceae (1-5); Simaroubaceae (1-5); Nyctaginaceae (6-10); Oxalidaceae (6-10); Moraceae (11-15); Commelinaceae (11-15); Violaceae (21-25); Convolvulaceae (21-25); Malvaceae (31-35); Caryophyllaceae (36-40); Solanaceae (36-40); Amaranthaceae (41-45); Euphorbiaceae (41-45); Polygonaceae (46-50); Apocynaceae (46-50); Asparagaceae (51-55); Plantaginaceae (51-55); Brassicaceae (71-75); Cyperaceae (86-90); Rosaceae (136-140); Fabaceae (136-140); Poaceae (166-170); Asteraceae (351-355); Boraginaceae (???); Campanulaceae (???); Lamiaceae (???); and Verbenaceae (???).

MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY
I don't consider myself a photographer, but I've been asked on multiple occasions how I get my close-up photographs.

Up until the end of 2023, I used successive generations of Google Pixel smartphones (4a, 6a, and 7 Pro) for my photographs. For close-up work, I had a set of four Bausch & Lomb Hastings triplet hand lenses (4x, 10x, 14x, and 20x) that I held up to my phone camera and photographed through.

In 2024, I switched to a dedicated camera with macro photography features -- an OM System Tough TG-7 with ring light and flash diffuser attachments.
