After a childhood splashing in the ponds, wetlands, lakes, streams and rivers of Illinois and the Mississippi River valley, I made good on a 5th grade decision to pursue a career in marine biology by leaving for Seattle and the University of Washington. Degrees in oceanography and fisheries and work with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and Washington Sea Grant (UW College of the Environment) have let me dabble my toes in Pacific Northwest waters for more than 20 years. Opportunities have also allowed me to spend a great deal of time with the region's freshwater and marine invertebrates and a good bit of time with marine algae and salt marsh plants as well. I'm an irregular poster at SalishSeaLife on Twitter and Facebook and love sharing the wonders of the shallows through work, play, family and friends.
