Canberra rejoins the GSB in 2021

Great Southern Bioblitz 2021 - Canberra

Canberra, the bush capital, is positioned between mountains and sea, and her woodlands and wetlands are home to many special and fascinating species. Like this male Gang-gang Cockatoo Callocephalon fimbriatum observed by @flinkbag ©flinkbag, Woden Valley, ACT, Australia.

2021 will be Canberra's second year participating in the Great Southern Bioblitz! Let's reflect on some of the statistics from last Bioblitz:

In total there were roughly 680 observations made of 280 spp by 33 observers over the Bioblitz period. The top
three species observed were the crimson rosella (Platycercus elegans ©jb2602, @jb2602 ), yellow-faced honey eater (Caligavis chrysops ©Vicki, @redsnow ), and the magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen).

In fact, 9 out of the top 10 observed species were birds!

The top non-avian species observed were the eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus, top left ©deborod, @deborod), Australian water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii ssp. howittii
, top right ©SamColgan, @sam_colgan), European honeybee (lower left © allybyrd, @allybyrd) and Early Nancy (below right, @steve818).

This year the Bioblitz will be held approximately a month later in the year (October 22-25) when it will be a bit warmer, and we should expect to see some more species emerging from their winter hiatus. In late October we might expect to see pink-eared ducks, royal spoonbills, more species of reptiles and many more insects, including the bogong moth which is at its peak around late October. Hopefully we will be able to spot several more species of orchids as well that time of year.

Let's see if we can smash our personal bests in the 2020 Bioblitz! Do you think we can reach 1000 observations and 500 species? Maybe we can break up the ave-club and get some non-birds into the top ten! How about getting 50 observers this year? Invite your friends to sign up and let's find out what's springing to life during the Great Southern Bioblitz in Canberra.

:O fairy wrens wasn't number one?????

To be honest i am surprised the Magpie didn't take out #1

Fairy-wrens came #17!! I was surprised yellow-faced honey eaters were up the top (actually tying with crimson rosellas for first place) but they were all observed by just 2 iNatters. So you could definitely make a bid for getting fairy-wrens to #1 if you so desired, @lizardview ..... you would probably need 20+ sightings to make that happen. What do you think? :p

17!!!!!!!!!
The Yellow faced is quite a surprise at #3
20+ sightings of Fariy Wrens? i just walked for 5 minutes and saw 30. getting pics is the tricky bit :)
